JUDE 5-16, MESSAGE #4

July 27, 2025 / DR. LARRY LAMB

INTRODUCTION

  • The ministry descriptions rarely mentioned are and of Christ’s church.
  • Regardless of whether it’s the first century or the twenty-first century, the church attracts:
  1. False teachers.
  2. False doctrine.
  3. False results.
  • We all need to stay in the truth, love the truth, and defend the truth.
  • 2 Peter 1:12-15 Therefore, I will always remind you about these things—even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught. 13 And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live. 14 For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life, 15 so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone.

JUDE 5-7 / UNFAITHFULNESS

  • Look at the “remind” pattern in Jude 5 So I want to remind you, though you already know these things that Jesus first rescued the nation of Israel from Egypt, but later he destroyed those who did not remain faithful.
  • Many people of Israel, although rescued from Egypt, were .
  • Jude 6 And I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them securely chained in prisons of darkness, waiting for the great day of judgment.
  • Angels were unfaithful.
  • Jude 7 And don’t forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God’s judgment.
  • The people of Sodom and Gomorrah were unfaithful through the perversion of homosexuality and all kinds of other sexual deviations.
  • Both faithfulness and unfaithfulness have their .

JUDE 8-16 / RECOGNIZING FALSE TEACHERS

They reject divine authority

  • Jude 8-11 8 In the same way, these people—who claim authority from their dreams—live immoral lives, defy authority, and scoff at supernatural beings.  9 But even Michael, one of the mightiest of the angels, did not dare accuse the devil of blasphemy, but simply said, “The Lord rebuke you!” (This took place when Michael was arguing with the devil about Moses’ body.) 10 But these people scoff at things they do not understand. Like unthinking animals, they do whatever their instincts tell them, and so they bring about their own destruction. 11 What sorrow awaits them! For they follow in the footsteps of Cain, who killed his brother. Like Balaam, they deceive people for money. And like Korah, they perish in their rebellion.
  • Cain – The way of pride.
  • Balaam – Merchandising the ministry.
  • Korah – Rebelled against Moses
  • All Old Testament illustrations that displayed toward God’s authority.
  • Jude 12-13 When these people eat with you in your fellowship meals commemorating the Lord’s love, they are like dangerous reefs that can shipwreck you. They are like shameless shepherds who care only for themselves. They are like clouds blowing over the land without giving any rain. They are like trees in autumn that are doubly dead, for they bear no fruit and have been pulled up by the roots. 13 They are like wild waves of the sea, churning up the foam of their shameful deeds. They are like wandering stars, doomed forever to blackest darkness.
    1. Deceptive
    2. Selfish
    3. Empty
    4. Fruitless
    5. Shameless
    6. Pretentious
  • Jude 14-15 Enoch, who lived in the seventh generation after Adam, prophesied about these people. He said, “Listen! The Lord is coming with countless thousands of his holy ones 15 to execute judgment on the people of the world. He will convict every person of all the ungodly things they have done and for all the insults that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
  • There are consequences to what false teachers say and do, know this: judgment is coming. There will be no escape for the guilty.
  • Jude 16 These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to satisfy their desires. They brag loudly about themselves, and they flatter others to get what they want.

7. Grumblers (Israelites grumbled against God)

8. Complainers (This is the person who chooses a deviant lifestyle and then complains about their unfortunate life.

9. Sinful (Opposite of God’s ways)

10. Prideful-pompous-swollen with excess.

11. Opportunist – (Show flattery to gain access to a person’s life.

  • 2 Peter 2:1-3 But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them. In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered. 3 In their greed, they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction will not be delayed.
  • Understand the truth, be discerning, and know what you believe. Be wise.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

WATCH OUT FOR CHURCHES THAT:

  1. Preach a message of self-esteem.
  2. Preach financial prosperity.
  3. Preach only of God’s love.
  4. Preach messages void of Jesus’ shed blood.
  5. Promote self-centered worship, a self-made vibe.
  6. Preach a Ted Talk Christianity without the CROSS.
  7. Preach that heaven and hell are not literal.
  8. Preach that portions of the Bible are helpful.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

SALVATION PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner. I know that the penalty for my sin is physical, spiritual, and eternal death. I acknowledge that I can’t do anything about my situation. But I know that You came to pay the penalty for my sin. I trust in You alone as the One who died in my place. I repent of my sin and trust in You alone as the only One who can place me in an eternal relationship with the living God. I receive joyfully receive Your gift of GRACE. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
