ATTITUDES FOR GODLY DEVELOPMENT: “HUMILITY”

March 8, 2026 / DR. LARRY LAMB

INTRODUCTION

  • As we mature in the Lord, humility should over time. But here is the truth: no one will ever reach the pinnacle of maturity.

“Those who know God will be humble. Those who know themselves cannot be proud.” John Trapp (1601–1669)

  • We in humility, not humility.
  • We may all have various sins that can trip us up, but the sin that resides in each of us is .
  • Proverbs 8:13 All who fear the Lord will hate evil. Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech.
  • Daniel 4:27 King Nebuchadnezzar, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Break from your wicked past and be merciful to the poor. Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.
  • Galatians 6:1-3 Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. 2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. 3 If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.

BEFORE ENCOUNTERING GOD: PRIDEFUL

  • Daniel 4:28-30 But all these things did happen to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later he was taking a walk on the flat roof of the royal palace in Babylon. 30 As he looked out across the city, he said, ‘Look at this great city of Babylon! By my own mighty power, I have built this beautiful city as my royal residence to display my majestic splendor.
  • There’s nothing wrong with success, more money, a new position, a bigger place, or a degree, but never forget that it is the Living God who these things.
  • Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.
  • Daniel 4:31-33 While these words were still in his mouth, a voice called down from heaven, ‘O King Nebuchadnezzar, this message is for you! You are no longer ruler of this kingdom. 32 You will be driven from human society. You will live in the fields with the wild animals, and you will eat grass like a cow. Seven periods of time will pass while you live this way, until you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world and gives them to anyone he chooses.’ 33 “That same hour the judgment was fulfilled, and Nebuchadnezzar was driven from human society. He ate grass like a cow, and he was drenched with the dew of heaven. He lived this way until his hair was as long as eagles’ feathers and his nails were like birds’ claws.
  • Pride has a way of leading people to lives, causing painful regrets, and driving away those who tried to help them.
  • Ephesians 4:31 (Characteristics of the Proud: ME) Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.
  • Ephesians 4:32 (Characteristics of the Humble: OTHERS) Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

AFTER ENCOUNTERING GOD: HUMBLE

  • Daniel 4:34-37 After this time had passed, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven.
  1. (v. 34) – It’s a challenge to grow in humility while looking .
34 My sanity returned, and I praised and worshiped the Most High and honored the one who lives forever. His rule is everlasting, and his kingdom is eternal.
  2. (v.34) – Pursue a fresh of the majesty of the Living God. (God is not stale, but our relationship can be. God doesn’t grow distant; we do.)
  3. (v.35) God is . It’s a way of saying that God is God and we are not.
35 All the people of the earth are nothing compared to him. He does as he pleases among the angels of heaven and among the people of the earth. No one can stop him or say to him, ‘What do you mean by doing these things?’
  4. (v.36) It’s not uncommon for people to change after God their pride. (I thought I could change myself; I thought I could quit my addiction anytime I wanted to; or I thought God had given up on me. You may be getting ready for the best part of your life.)
36 “When my sanity returned to me, so did my honor and glory and kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored as head of my kingdom, with even greater honor than before. 37“Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honor the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble the proud.

CLOSING

  • Pride hardens people. Humility makes people pliable in God’s hands.

“Moses spent forty years thinking he was somebody; forty years learning he was nobody; and forty years discovering what God can do with a nobody.” D.L. Moody

My name is Pride. I am a cheater.

I cheat you of your God-given destiny… because you demand your own way.

I cheat you of contentment… because you “deserve better than this.”

I cheat you of knowledge… because you already know it all.

I cheat you of healing… because you’re too full of me to give.

I cheat you of holiness… because you refuse to admit when you’re wrong.

I cheat you of vision… because you’d rather look in the mirror than out a window.

I cheat you of genuine friendship… because nobody’s going to know the real you.

I cheat you of love… because real romance demands sacrifice.

I cheat you of greatness in heaven… because you refuse to wash another’s feet on earth.

I cheat you of God’s glory… because I convince you to seek your own.

My name is Pride. I am a cheater.

You like me because you think I’m always looking out for you. Untrue.

I’m looking to make a fool of you.

God has so much for you, I admit, but don’t worry… If you stick with me You’ll never know.

SALVATION PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner. I know that the penalty of my sin is physical, spiritual, and eternal death. I acknowledge that I can’t do anything about my situation. But I know that You came to pay the penalty for my sin. I trust in You alone as the One who died in my place. I repent of my sin and trust in You alone as the only One who can place me in an eternal relationship with the living God. I desire to be Your child. I desire to live as Your child. In Your name. Amen.
