INTRODUCTION

  • The Doctrine of Pneumatology is a particular discipline within Christian Theology, that focuses on the Study of the Holy Spirit.
  • Pneumatology = is derived from the Greek word, “Pneuma,” can be translated to “spirit,” “wind,” or “breath.”
  • John 3:8 “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
  • Acts 2:2 “And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.”

1. WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT

  • We teach that there is but one living and true God, an infinite, all-knowing spirit (John 4:24), perfect in all his attributes, one in essence, eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Simply put, the Bible declares that the Holy Spirit is God because He possesses all the attributes of God.
  • He is God the Holy Spirit, the eternal third person of the Trinity.
  • One God but three persons. The Spirit is God, is neither Father nor the Son. He is a third individual person.
  • John 16:12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the father has is mine; therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

2. WHERE IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

  • The Holy Spirit is everywhere. He has the same attributes of God. All-Powerful, All-Knowing, and Omnipresent
  • God’s own Spirit comes to indwell the believer and secures and preserves his eternal salvation.
  • Ephesians 1:13 “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.”
  • 1 Corinthians 3:16 “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”

3. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

  1. He convicts – He convinces people of their need for a savior through Jesus, the Christ and his redemptive work on the cross.
  2. He saves – The effectual call of the elect begins with the Spirit’s convicting work, as he awakens their consciences to the reality of sin, righteousness, and judgment. But he does not stop there. The unbelieving heart must be made alive- transformed, cleansed, and renewed (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8; John 3:7-8).
  3. He takes Permanent Residence in our hearts – Once we are saved and belong to God, the Spirit takes up permanent residence in the life of the new believer, forever sealing us with the confirming, certifying, and assuring pledge of our eternal state (2 Corinthians 1:22, John 6:27, 2 Corinthians 1:22, and Ephesians 1:13).
  4. He brings Sinners to Repentance – There can be no repentance or faith until the heart has been regenerated. In the moment of regeneration, the Holy Spirit imparts the gift of repentant faith to sinners- bringing them to saving faith in Christ and enabling them to turn away from sin. The result is a dramatic conversion (Acts 11:15-18).
  5. He Sanctifies – To “sanctify” is to set apart something for special use; to “sanctify” a person is to make him holy (or better said Set-apart/separate) (1 Thessalonians 4:3).
  6. He produces fruitGalatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” The fruit of the Holy Spirit is the result of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the life of a Christian. (Romans 8:9; Galatians 5:22-23)
  7. He gives gifts – He blesses each believer with spiritual gifts used for building up the church according to His will and to prepare us for works of service. No matter the gift, its purpose is to edify and mature the church and to glorify God in serving others (1 Corinthians 12:7-11).
