TITUS SERIES WEEK 3: THE LEADER’S DUTY – GUARDING THE CHURCH FROM FALSE TEACHING

August 2, 2026   /   PASTOR SETH BROOKS   /   Cielo Vista Church

  • Titus 1:10-16 10 For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others. This is especially true of those who insist on circumcision for salvation. 11 They must be silenced, because they are turning whole families away from the truth by their false teaching. And they do it only for money. 12 Even one of their own men, a prophet from Crete, has said about them, “The people of Crete are all liars, cruel animals, and lazy gluttons.” 13 This is true. So reprimand them sternly to make them strong in the faith. 14 They must stop listening to Jewish myths and the commands of people who have turned away from the truth. 15 Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.

  • Three parts
  1. False teachers exist; how to spot them (Titus 1:10-12).
  2. Rebuke false teachers, for a purpose (Titus 1:13).
  3. False teaching harms God’s people (Titus 1:14-16).

  • Paul’s 3 concerns in 1 Timothy and Titus
  1. Paul longed to see corporate and personal holiness develop in the church.
  2. He was concerned about the health of the church.
  3. Paul wanted to ensure that what was being taught was accurate and true.

“The nature and end of our judgment, or sentence, must be corrective, not vindictive; for healing, not destruction” -John Owen

SALVATION PRAYER

Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner. I know that the penalty of my sin is physical, spiritual, and eternal death. I acknowledge that I can’t do anything about my situation. But I know that You came to pay the penalty for my sin. I trust in You alone as the One who died in my place. I repent of my sin and trust in You alone as the only One who can place me in an eternal relationship with the living God. I desire to be Your child. I desire to live as Your child. In Your name. Amen.
